English Vinglish (Box-office)

Subtitled in Cantonese & English for Hong Kong release, Gauri Shinde’s film which stars the fabulous Sri Devi, has done approximately US $200000 Box office in Hong Kong. This makes it the second most successful Bollywood film in HK territory, with 3 Idiots being number one!

What is amazing is that film is has 29 shows a day at 7 screens in HK, which is the widest release any Indian film has ever got in HK. It has been in the Hong Kong Top Ten films chart for the past three weeks!

What’s also interesting is they are also screening the film at ‘The Directors club’ screen, which is like Red lounge and Hindi films are not released in these screens ideally. It’s great that Indian films are getting recognized and accepted worldwide for their versatility and content. English Vinglish with its universal theme has been widely appreciated.

Following the exceptional success of English Vinglish in new markets like Hong Kong, Germany, Taiwan and Korea, Eros International Media Ltd, is all set to release the blockbuster in across 33 screens in Japan on June 28, 2014. Leading lady Sridevi will attend the grand premiere of the film in Tokyo on 29th May, which will be also be attended by Akie Abe, the First lady of Japan and Agnes Chan, the famous Japanese singer.

Directed by Gauri Shinde, English Vinglish released worldwide successfully in October 2012 and continues to reap gold at the box office in new markets. In Taiwan, the film became the second biggest Bollywood grosser of all time amassing over US$300,000 at the box office.

The esteemed actress is elated with the buzz around her film in Japan and is looking forward to attending the film’s premiere and promote the film. “English Vinglish is a universal story that truly resonates with global audiences and I’m very excited about reactions by Japanese audiences." says Sridevi.

The buzz for the film in Japan began last year when director Gauri Shinde was invited to attend the prestigious Aichi International Women’s Film Festival in August 2013 for the screening of the film.

The Japanese market has already proven to be a strong one for Eros with the company releasing Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om in 2013 across 14 screens which earned over US $150,000 at the Japanese box office. Eros has also previously released Student of the Year, Agent Vinod and Chalo Dilli in Japan.

Close on the heels of the stupendous success of Sridevi’s comeback film English Vinglish in Japan, where the film garnered box office collections of a whopping $ 1.4 million plus, Eros International is all set to release the blockbuster in Romania this month on the 24th of October across 15 screens approx.

The film has performed exceptionally well in other new markets like South Korea, Hong Kong, Germany and Taiwan too and the team is confident of its continued appreciation in new territories.

English Vinglish, directed by Gauri Shinde released in Oct 2012 and has since fascinated audiences worldwide with its universal subject of people living abroad in an English world trying hard to learn English to be accepted by their society.

Cocktail and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara are some of the other releases by Eros which have enjoyed success in Romania.
